Laptop Support In Ubuntu 5.10
Six months in development, Twenty eight official testers (twice for community volunteers), and one goal: to provide kick-ass laptop support for Ubuntu 5.10 onwards.

My experience with a Toshiba Tecra M2 has been promising:

1. 8 of 12 function keys work out of the box
2. Flawless hibernate/suspend
3. Great 3D acceleration with the `nvidia-glx` driver, although experiencing issues with resume from hibernate
4. Bluetooth input devices work (tested with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard).

However I have two major issues with it:

1. Integrated card reader doesn't work at all
2. Switching to an external display displays screen garbage (upstream has been notified about it) - althought this may change for Ubuntu 6.04.

On a side note, I'm beginning to like the UK keyboard layout.

The Tecra M2 is a great Ubuntu laptop. With a little tweaking you have a unit that generally supports majority of the hardware functions. And that is a good thing for Linux indeed.

Xubuntu - XFCE + Ubuntu

Recently the development of a new flavor of Ubuntu powered by the XFCE desktop environment, instead of gnome/metacity was announced.

For those of you who want to try out the new Xubuntu, read the wiki page on Xubuntu, and install the xubuntu-desktop package, only in breezy. If you are using Hoary now you will have to wait till Breezy is released and you upgrade. After installing xubuntu-desktop, you can use XFCE by selecting it when you login using the graphical login, from under “sessions”.

If you are interested in contributing to, or following, the development of Xubuntu, join the Xubuntu mailing list.

Again, Xubuntu is just like Kubuntu, plain old Ubuntu, with a different desktop environment. The objective behind making Kubuntu and Xubuntu available to make it a smoother process for those who want to use alternative desktop environs.
